Sorption

Sorption is a process in which a chemical substance becomes attached to another substance - adsorption. The attachment can be mediated by physical contact alone, or by chemical bonding. The attached substances can be confined to a surface or fixed matrix, or they can be in a fluid - absorption. The reverse of sorption is desorption. Because adsorption is always exothermic, desorption is always endothermic (energy must be added).
